Her Children

As we approached the airport in Turkey, Donald took a back road behind the airport. We came up to a small jet plane, stopping no more than one hundred feet away from the stairs. A man in a high visibility vest moves towards us, grabbing our small duffle bags to place them in the bottom of the jet. As he loaded our bags and secured the luggage hold, the pilot walks up to our car, opening the door for Donald and greeting him with a warm hello and a hug.

“This is our shuttle?” I could not help but blurt out loud to Pasha.

He shrugged and suggested, “you should wait for me to signal you out of the car.” Which he did mere seconds later.

When I stepped foot inside the small jet, it looked much bigger than the outside would show and much more high class. The way of the British, higher ranking spy, to fly from Turkey to America- by way of private jet. Pasha and I took seats next to each other, in large cream-colored leather chairs, each with their own arm rests and cup holders. They felt more like couches than plane seats. I looked around at the interior, taking it all in.

There were two swiveling chairs in the front, not turning on a full circle turn but only side to side. Behind them were four seats facing each other. The two Pasha and I sat in were backed to the windows, facing the rest of the plane, with a bar next to us and a television on the wall behind the bar and another on the wall in the front. Behind the bar was a door, leading to bunks and a lavatory, which was considerably nicer than any commercial flight I have been on recently.

The pilot brought a flight attendant on and his co-pilot, the two making their acquaintances with us before heading into the cockpit. The flight attendant was a British man who worked for the British special operations and was charged with protection duty as well as being an attendant. He was not a chatty type, he kept quiet and only spoke when asking if we needed anything. I could not deny a couple small glasses of Moscato, whilst relaxing on the large comfortable seats, which happen to be lounge seats as well. Pasha and I laid back in our seats, watching the televisions and taking a small snooze until we were just passing over Northern Italy.

We are stopping in Paris to change planes, duty officers and pilots before heading over the Atlantic to the United States- where Doroteya’s children hopefully still live. I put down another small glass of wine, this time a honey mead. I may be using wine to deal with feelings I cannot face fully at this very moment, but this is something I cannot get while on this mission. Wine and large seats that suck you in are just what I needed for the time being.
